Forensic Chemist III
Dr. Madison Schackmuth is a Forensic Chemist III at the CFSRE with a background in forensic toxicology. Her current research includes monitoring toxic adulterant prevalence across the United States and developing solutions to reduce bottlenecks involved in the retrospective analyses of HRMS data sets.
Dr. Schackmuth received her Doctor of Philosophy in Forensic Science from Sam Houston State University (SHSU). Her doctoral work centered on identifying and characterizing fentanyl analogs in forensic toxicology investigations, contributing to improved detection and classification for the potent and rapidly evolving compounds. Previously, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry with minors in Biology and Criminology from the University of Denver (DU) where she gained experience in organic syntheses through research focused on the preparation of quinoline analogs for tuberculosis drug discovery.
Dr. Schackmuth is an active member of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences (AAFS - Toxicology Section), Society of Forensic Toxicologists (SOFT), and The International Association of Forensic Toxicologists (TIAFT) and was a recipient of the inaugural SOFT Huestis & Smith Toxicology International Travel Award for travel to the 2025 TIAFT meeting. She is passionate about teaching upcoming forensic scientists and building cross-disciplinary collaborations believing diverse perspectives can lead to more effective and creative approaches to complex forensic challenges.
